The Miracle of Restraint: an ode to friendship

Back! Back! To the recesses of my heart!

There stay, and come out not.

Your chains are ringing

As you drag it around

Hung’ring for prey of a love unbound.

Back! Back! And come out not!

Your retreat and surrender

may bleed me to death;

better I be hurt, better I bleed

than someone I love

and lose the love I pled.

A bright day’s coming

and in calmness you may out come.

For you I shall open the door

and let you go, explore.

For that is what you ought -

a love not hid, but giv’n and sought.

Yet still, if once you step out

the precious becomes the prey,

and they you strangle and chain right away,

I’ll drain all my strength

Just to get you back to my heart.

Better I be hurt, better I bleed,

than someone I love

and lose the love I pled.
