See You Soon, Cap!
“For the praises of man I will never ever stand
For the kingdoms of this world I'll never give my heart
away or shout my praise
My allegiance and devotion, My heart's desire and all
emotion
Go to serve the Man who died upon that tree.
Only a God like You could be worthy of my praise….”
I would like to have this Tommy Walker song as my LSS (last song syndrome) today. It was the closing song at Capt. Jessup
Bahinting’s wake last night, Aug. 24, 2012.
I went there with my housemates and saw the place filled with bouquets
of different varieties of white flowers.
I didn’t know him personally until his aroma spread wide when the twin
engine Seneca Piper he drove for DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo crashed. When he died, all his accomplishments were highlighted,
especially the part of him being a Christian Pastor and doing what he did out
of compassion and love for Christ Jesus.
As a fellow member of God’s family, I went to his wake to
witness how people would remember him. And
they DID remember him. Countless selfless
acts he did for others were especially underscoring the fact that he’s a pilot. I realize that God will always make use of
His people in every sphere of influence and capacity that they presently have
in their hands. No excuse for this –
only the heart of willingness to love and to serve.
While I was basking at the pride of having a brother in
the Lord being accorded with such recognition, the presider of the evening
service rightly pulled my leg when she declared, “To God be the glory! That’s what always Captain Bahinting said
every time something good is spoken of him.
To God be the glory!”
And it felt like I was poured cold water on. Of course! God’s glory! How could I dare forget that? Nothing that Captain Bahinting had done could
have been made possible apart from God. In
the end, it is His glory that was known through the Captain’s life. And we concluded the service with our hearts
singing: “Only a God like You is worthy
of my praise, all my hope and faith, to only a King of all kings do I bow my
knee and sing, give my everything….”
His was a life well-lived indeed. What a beautiful ending he had, fitting for every
one of us to look on as we yet face our own.
Thank you for all that you’ve left us, Cap! We’ll see you soon!
:)
