Senior Hair Care: Tips for Caregivers
Are you the primary caregiver of your aging loved one? You could be concerned with a lot of aspects about their wellbeing. Even simple activities, such as caring
for the hair, can now seem challenging due to their
aging condition. Yet, even simple activities as hair care can already improve their wellness.
To encourage you in helping your aging loved one do make this matter seem lighter, consider these helpful tips on senior hair care.
1. Be Cheerful
When you’re attending to your elderly
loved one’s hair, strive to keep a cheerful attitude no matter what happens.
When you’re fixing their hair, you might hear or experience unpleasant
reactions from them. When this happens, maintain your
cheerfulness. A positive attitude is
contagious and your senior loved one will eventually feel relaxed.
2. Do Simple Styles
As the caregiver, aim for the comfort and convenience of your senior loved one. Select simple hair styles especially those that they prefer.
Your loved one may have already been very accustomed to their present
hairstyle. Encourage them to try something new, styles that are simple and fit to their personality. It also helps if
you show them pictures of styles that are ideal for their current hair length.
3. Adjust Water Temperature
When taking a bath, our aging loved ones
may not like a certain temperature. Be mindful of the water temperature. Otherwise, they may not want to take a bath at all or, much less, wash their hair. Their personal hygiene gets compromised if they don't wash or take a bath. To address this, ensure
that the water temperature is at the right range before helping them to bathe.
4. Select Products Wisely
So that you can give quality hair care to your aging loved one, ensure that the products
you use for their hair are safe for their scalp. Some products contain
substances that can be too strong for a senior’s
skin. Be mindful of your hair care products at home.
5. Seek Assistance
Whenever you find that caring for your
aging loved one requires some assistance, don’t hesitate to get the help you need. You can request your family members or friends. When they are inaccessible, there are also professional care providers who can take care of your loved one on your behalf. They can help you ensure that sufficient personal care, including hair care for your aging family member, are in place.
If you have already heard of the adage, “The hair is our
crowning glory.", then you know how
vital it is to assist our senior family members in ensuring that proper hair
care is given to them. Look for the reputable care providers who can assist your loved one when you're not around.
